Is the pacifier for kids or parents?

Sounds like a dumb question, but for the last couple of days I have come to the conclusion it is for the sanity of the parents and not the child. My sitter says she does not give him his "passy" during the day anymore. Well he gets it at night. He doesnt neccessarily need it, but it does help calm him down if he is tired, angry, or just plain upset. Like last night he got a spanking-(hope that is ok with all of you :0)
He took a rolling pin to the TV. -He is quick- I didnt even know he knew where we kept it. I cant believe he could swing it- it's kinda heavy.
Anyways, he got a spanking from dad. Well Dad had been his buddy ALL night (mom has to sit her bottom on the couch to keep away the braxton hicks/ contractions) Well Chad couldnt get him to calm down, and I couldnt..but behold the pacifier made it all better.
And the house was quiet again. They say it is good for a child to "cry it out', but I dont know how good it is for the parents...
suggestions would be nice!

Yes, it's for the parents, but what's wrong with that? My advice - do it today or wait until way after the baby comes (otherwise he might feel like the baby stole it from him). Jos was at least 2 and got off the pacifier when we finally lost all of them and told her, Sorry can't find it. That was all she needed. Gav was another story. He LOVED his pacifier. I wanted to get him off of it before Jon's wedding (age 2)otherwise I knew it would probably be in his mouth walking down the isle. So, I resorted to cutting a tiny hole in it. It looses it's suction and they don't want it anymore. But he was heartbroken that his "suckie" was broken. The best thing I did was line a trash can with a new bag and together we threw it away. Then I didn't throw anything else in there and over the next day or two he would want it, go to the trash can, pull it out and try it and trow it away again. It was painstaking for both of us, but it worked. No lost pacifier on the airplane & not in his mouth for wedding. (I bet Jon doesn't know I went through all that just for him!)

I dont think that I would take him off the paci either until well after the baby gets here and then you can tell him those are for babies....He is already going to feel left out and confused so he needs to have some kind of security when his all too familiar world gets turned up side down in the next few weeks. KEEP THE PACI!!!! Infact...go buy more paci's!!!!!!!!!!!! haha
